_Satire | A fictional, humorous commentary on American politics inspired by The
Matrix._

_Washington, D.C.—November 4, 2026_

In a stunning development Tuesday night, millions of Americans entered voting booths,
selected the blue pill, and emerged Wednesday morning believing they had successfully
escaped the Matrix.

Unfortunately, the machines were still running.

The cables were still connected.

And the people responsible for maintaining the simulation were already scheduling
their next congressional recess.

For those unfamiliar with the 1999 science-fiction classic _The Matrix_, the premise
is straightforward: humanity lives inside an elaborate artificial reality designed
to keep people blissfully unaware of the system controlling them.

Sound familiar?

In the film, Morpheus offers Neo two choices.

Take the blue pill and remain comfortably asleep.

Take the red pill and discover the truth.

America, having apparently spent the last two years experimenting with the red pill,
decided Tuesday that perhaps ignorance wasn’t such a bad arrangement after all.

**The Matrix Has Been Rebooted**

Following the election, Washington technicians immediately began installing Matrix
2027, an upgraded simulation promising greater transparency, improved accountability,
affordable living, and a revolutionary new feature called bipartisan cooperation.

Early reports suggest the cooperation module is incompatible with existing hardware.

The system’s developers assured voters that the latest version would correct numerous
defects in the previous administration.

Unfortunately, the update requires 1,400 pages of legislation, $3.7 trillion in
additional funding, and permission to restart the economy.

Installation is expected to take approximately two years.

Actual improvements may require another election.

**Meet the New Agents. Same Sunglasses.**

One of the most memorable characters in _The Matrix_ is Agent Smith, a relentless
enforcer who can inhabit virtually anyone connected to the simulation.

Washington has developed a remarkably similar technology.

Its agents can appear as senators, representatives, committee chairs, political
consultants, cable news analysts, or individuals who begin every sentence with “
The American people have spoken.”

Their primary function is to protect the system from dangerous anomalies such as
balanced budgets, legislative simplicity, and citizens who actually read bills before
forming opinions about them.

Unlike Agent Smith, however, congressional agents possess a unique defensive capability.

When confronted with evidence that their policies have failed, they can instantly
transform into members of an investigative committee examining the failures of the
previous administration.

Scientists have yet to determine whether this process has a theoretical limit.

**The Oracle Predicts the Next Two Years**

In _The Matrix_, the Oracle possesses extraordinary insight into future events.

Washington has its own version.

They’re called political analysts.

Within hours of Tuesday’s election, hundreds appeared on television explaining precisely
why the results were inevitable, despite having spent the previous six months explaining
why they were impossible.

Their predictions for the next two years are remarkably consistent.

Democrats will explain that Republicans caused every problem they inherited.

Republicans will explain that Democrats are making every problem worse.

Both parties will accuse the other of threatening democracy.

Congress will hold hearings.

The president will threaten vetoes.

The media will announce a constitutional crisis approximately every eleven business
days.

And somewhere in America, a family will open its grocery bill and wonder whether
anyone in Washington remembers what groceries are.

The Oracle’s final prediction was particularly disturbing:

“By 2028, Americans will once again be offered two pills and told that this time
the choice will change everything.”

**There Is No Spoon. But There Is a $40 Billion Program to Study One.**

Perhaps the most profound moment in _The Matrix_ occurs when a young boy informs
Neo that the secret to bending a spoon is understanding that the spoon does not
exist.

Congress has apparently embraced this philosophy.

There is no deficit.

There is no waste.

There is no inflation.

There are merely competing interpretations of fiscal reality.

And if enough legislators agree that a particular expenditure is an investment rather
than spending, the money apparently materializes through a process known as congressional
appropriations.

Treasury officials have declined to explain why this technique does not work for
ordinary Americans attempting to pay their mortgages.

Meanwhile, a bipartisan commission has proposed allocating $40 billion to investigate
whether the spoon could become a shovel-ready infrastructure project.

**The Resistance Has a New Problem**

In the original film, humanity’s resistance operates from Zion, the last free human
city.

In America, the resistance appears to operate primarily on social media.

Its members spend approximately fourteen hours per day exposing the Matrix by sharing
memes produced by algorithms designed to maximize their engagement with the Matrix.

Some have even purchased premium subscriptions to ensure their warnings about corporate
manipulation reach a larger audience.

The machines are reportedly delighted.

One resistance leader announced that the only way to defeat the system was to persuade
everyone to abandon their preferred political party and join his newly established
political movement.

Membership costs $29.95 per month.

Premium members receive a commemorative red pill, a blue pill, and access to an
exclusive podcast explaining why everyone else is brainwashed.

**The Architect Finally Explains Everything**

Near the end of _The Matrix Reloaded_, Neo meets the Architect, the entity responsible
for designing the simulation.

He discovers something astonishing.

The system has been reset before.

Many times.

Each reset creates the appearance of fundamental change while preserving the underlying
machinery.

Which brings us back to Washington.

Every two years, Americans are told they face the most consequential election of
their lifetimes.

Every four years, the stakes become existential.

Each new congressional majority promises to restore accountability, reduce dysfunction,
and return government to the people.

And yet the federal government somehow manages to grow, the national debt continues
its remarkable upward trajectory, and congressional approval remains a fascinating
experiment in how low public confidence can fall without affecting employee retention.

Perhaps the Architect wasn’t a machine after all.

Perhaps he was a congressional parliamentarian.

**The Real Red Pill**

There is, of course, one possibility that neither political party seems particularly
eager to discuss.

What if the red pill and the blue pill are not Republican and Democrat?

What if the real red pill is recognizing that political parties are not substitutes
for independent judgment?

That no election eliminates the need for oversight?

That changing the people who operate a system does not automatically change the
incentives that govern it?

And that citizens who surrender their critical thinking to a political party have
merely selected their preferred version of the simulation?

That would be an uncomfortable truth indeed.

Fortunately, Washington has developed a bipartisan solution.

A congressional commission will investigate the matter.

Its findings will be released shortly after the 2028 election.

Assuming the Matrix doesn’t require another reboot.
